The Mustangs just couldn’t stop scoring.

A Chris Thompson-led Sweetwater squad qualified for state, topping hosts Snyder in the qualifying game at Snyder High School on Saturday afternoon.

Sweetwater finished the tournament going 4-0, breezing through pool play opponents in Wink, Stamford and 7-on-7 newcomer, Wellman-Union.

Prior to the qualifying round loss, Snyder capped a 2-1 group stage showing, inching past Levelland in the opening round, blowing past 1A Blackwell and falling to Hawley in a suprise loss.

Aside the Mustangs of Sweetwater, Stamford also was in Pool B, finishing 1-2 in the group that showed a tough loss against Wink to conclude group stage play.

Brownwood also carried Big Country hopes, looking for their 10th consecutive state tournament berth dating back to 2007. Despite a 3-0 group showing, the Lions fell to a Andrews squad where there has been lots of history between the two teams in recent meetings.

In the 2A ranks, Anson finished 1-2 in a tough group for the Tigers, falling to Kermit and Andrews and picking up a win against Winters, where the Blizzards were bottom of Pool F. Roscoe caught the eyes of most smaller teams that took part in the tournament, picking up a victory against Big Spring.

Graham, who have already qualified for state, took part for more playing experience for the team and dominating Pool F, scoring 161 total points in three games in the group against Merkel, Roscoe and Big Spring.

Merkel, who finished 1-2 in the group, advanced to the qualifying round with the advantage of tie-break rules where they fell to Lubbock Estacado, 27-13.

Sweetwater join Abilene High, Abilene Cooper, Graham and Abilene Wylie in the state qualifying list. The Division II tournament will take place at Veteran’s Park and Athletic Complex in College Station on June 29 and 30th.
